Iraqi soldiers carry their weapons during a mission against Islamic State in Iraq
Nineveh (Iraqinews.com) – Six Islamic State militants were killed in an airstrike by the U.S-led inteational coalition warplanes on Mosul city, a security source was quote as saying Sunday.
Speaking to Baghdad Today news website, the source said, “The U.S.-led inteational coalition carried out an airstrike in coordination with the Nineveh Operations Command, targeting Islamic State remnants in Badush village in northweste Mosul.”
“The air raid left six Islamic State militants dead and one of their tunnels completely destroyed,” the source pointed out.
On July 10, Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi announced liberation of the second largest Iraqi city of Mosul from IS militants, who had captured it in 2014. More than 25,000 militants were killed throughout the campaign, which started in October 2016.
Since the city was declared free, security troops continue to comb weste Mosul areas for hidden IS cells. Despite the victory over IS in the city, observers say Islamic State is believed to constitute a security threat even after the group’s defeat at its main havens across Iraqi provinces.

Iraqi troops arrest a man and take him to a lock-up for interrogation Mosul (IraqiNews.com) Security troops have arrested an Islamic State members, along with one of his relatives in Mosul, the local affairs department in Nineveh said on Sunday.
“Troops managed to arrest an Islamic State leader, along with one of his relatives who is an army conscript, while he was at the nationality department in Nineveh,” the statement added.
“The leader was recognized by the intelligence sources of the department,” it said, adding that the militant used to work at the group’s Hisbah ( vigilantism) department.
His relative, according to the statement, knew about his involvement with IS and that he facilitated smuggling him to Baghdad after liberation of Nineveh.
The two suspects were extradited to authorities in question so legal measures would be taken.

Explosion in Iraq
Diyala (Iraqinews.com) – Four people, including a well-placed municipal official, were killed and wounded Monday in two bomb attacks in Iraq’s Diyala province, security sources were quoted as saying.
Speaking to Alghad Press news website, a source said, “Three bombs planted by unknown men went off outside a house of a member of al-Abbara city council in northeaste Baqubah, leaving the municipal official and his uncle wounded.”
The two were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment and security forces opened a probe into the bomb attack.
In another incident, a source said an explosive charge exploded in al-Azim area in northe Diyala, leaving a man killed and his wife injured.
In January 2015, Iraqi forces announced liberation of Diyala province from Islamic State extremist militants who proclaimed an “Islamic Caliphate” in Iraq and Syria in 2014.
The province has seen months of fighting between Iraqi troops and IS militants especially in the Jalawla and Saadiyah areas in the province’s north and areas near the town of Muqdadiyah.

Security men stand near a site of a car bomb blast in Baghdad
Kirkuk (Iraqinews.com) – Two security men were seriously wounded in a bomb attack that targeted their police vehicle in one of Kirkuk villages on Saturday night, a security source was quoted as saying.
Speaking to Shafaq News website, the source said, “A bomb exploded on Saturday night while a police vehicle was passing by Tal Khadija village in Kirkuk’s al-Rashad district, leaving two policemen seriously wounded.”
“The two security men were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment,” the source pointed out.
Iraqi forces took over Kirkuk in mid October in response to a referendum Kurdistan Region held in September for independence from Iraq. Kirkuk is one of the areas where Baghdad and Erbil dispute sovereignty.
Last week, six Islamic State militants were killed in a security campaign in Hawija city, west of Kirkuk. The city was recaptured from Islamic State last year.

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) The Central Bank of Iraq (CBI) currency auction on February 11 registered $194,322,309 in sales, a -2.87% volume decline from the US $200,067,351 sold by Iraqi Dinar, credit and transfer at the previous auction held on February 8. The latest auction was attended by 45 banks and 9 remittance companies. The same institutions attended the auction held on February 11 compared to the previous auction. Data for the February 11 auction was made public by CBI Announcement Number 3632. Dollar sales in the in the period January 1, 2018 to February 11, 2018 saw an increase of -1% compared to the sales of US $4.35 billion in the same period in 2017. The total amount of US currency sold by CBI in the calendar year 2017 was US $15.7 billion. An analysis of the monthly dollar sales by CBI since January 2016 reveals highly fluctuating volumes. During the period from January 2016 to February 2018, sales of US dollars averaged US $1.79 billion per month. Peak volumes were reached in May this year when sales touched US $2.3 billion.

Two Iraqi children appear in a bad condition as the anti-terror war left one in four Iraqi children in poverty, according to a UNAMI statement
Baghdad (Iraqinews.com) – A UN agency has revealed that violent acts in Iraq have left one in four children in poverty and pushed families to extreme measures to survive.
In a statement, a copy of which was obtained by Alghad Press on Sunday, the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) echoed a call by the UNICEF and UN-Habitat for urgent investment to restore basic infrastructure and services for children and families in Iraq.
“Violence may have subsided in Iraq, but it has upended the lives of millions across the country, leaving one in four children in poverty and pushing families to extreme measures to survive,” the statement read.
According to a UNICEF and UN-Habitat assessment, promoting investment in Iraq is necessary to restore basic infrastructure and services for children; otherwise the hard-won gains to end conflict in Iraq are in jeopardy.

Security forces search a car following a shooting attack in Iraq
Salauddin (Iraqinews.com) – Six people from the same family were killed and injured in an armed attack in Dujail district, south of Salahuddin, on Saturday night, the Interior Ministry’s media office was quoted as saying.
In a statement, a copy of which was obtained by Alforat News, the media office said, “An armed group opened fire on a house in al-Jumhuri area, east of Dujail district, leaving three of the family members who were inside the home dead and three others injured.”
The office added that security forces launched a manhunt to arrest perpetrators of the shooting, and opened a probe to determine circumstances of the incident.
The Shia-dominated Dujail district is considered one of the calmest towns in Iraq despite the presence of Islamic State remnants in neighboring areas.
Violence in the country has surged further with the emergence of Islamic State extremist militants who proclaimed an “Islamic Caliphate” in Iraq and Syria in 2014.

Baghdad (Iraqinews.com) – Eight people were killed and injured in a bomb blast that rocked a northe Baghdad district on Saturday night, a security source was quoted as saying.
The Kuwaiti al-Watan newspaper quoted the source saying, “A roadside bomb went off in Dujail district, 70 km north of Baghdad, leaving two persons dead and six others injured.”
“Security forces cordoned off the blast site and prevented passers-by from approaching in anticipation of any other bomb attack,” the source said.
Despite the presence of Islamic State remnants in nearby areas, it is rare for the Shia-dominated Dujail district to witness bomb blasts or violent acts as it is considered as one of the calmest towns in Iraq.
The Iraqi capital has seen almost daily bombings and armed attacks against security members, paramilitary troops and civilians since the Iraqi govement launched a wide-scale campaign to retake Islamic State-occupied areas in 2016. Members of al-Hashd al-Shaabi. Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) The pro-govement paramilitary troops have repulsed an Islamic State attack launched against the border between Iraq and Syria, the media service announced.
In a statement on Friday, the service of al-Hashd al-Shaabi (Popular Mobilization Forces) said, “troops of the 29th brigade foiled, in the evening, an attack by IS members against Tal Sufuk region, on borders between Iraq and Syria.”
The attack, according to the statement, “is still ongoing.”
On Tuesday, the troops thwarted a similar attack inflicting huge losses in lives and equipment against the militants.
Last month, the Iraqi Media News Agency quoted Farhan Mohamed al-Duleimi, member of the Anbar provincial council as saying that intelligence information from Syria confirmed presence of IS members near al-BuKamal region in Syria to launch attacks against Qaim, located near Iraqi-Syrian borders, and that they prepared for suicide attacks to target military units deployed on borders between Iraq and Syria.

German Defense Minister, Ursula von der Leyen
Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) Germany’s defense minister ursula Von der Leyen arrived on Friday in Baghdad to discuss with Iraqi officials the battle against Islamic State militants, according to DPA news agency.
Der Leyen is scheduled to meet Saturday with Iraqi President Fuad Masum and Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi.
Germany has been a member of the United States-led coalition to fight Islamic State militants.
The mandate for German troops fighting IS in Iraq and Syria is expected to expire in a few weeks.
Currently, there are 150 German troopers stationed near Kurdistan Region’s capital Erbil for the purpose of training of Kurdish troops.
Iraqi declared victory over Islamic State militants in December, ending a three-year campaign backed by the inteational coalition to eliminate the militants’ self-styled “caliphate”.
But the group still poses a security challenge with occasional attacks against civilians and security members.

“A bomb exploded near a market in al-Yusufiya region, south of Baghdad, leaving one person killed and three others wounded,” the source told Baghdad Today. “Ambulance rushed to the blast spot and transferred the wounded to hospital for treatment, while the victim was taken to forensic medicine department.”
Moreover, two tribal fighters were injured in another bomb explosion in south of the capital.
“A bomb went off, today, on the side of a road in Arab Jabour region, south of Baghdad, targeting a patrol of the Tribal Mobilization Forces,” another source told Alghad Press.
“The blast left two personnel wounded,” the source added. “Security cordoned off the explosion scene and conducted investigations , while the wounded were taken to hospital.”

Unidentified gunmen attack a checkpoint of Al-Hashd Al-Shaabi Nineveh (IraqiNews.com) Three paramilitary personnel were killed as a suicide attacker blew up himself in west of Mosul, a police source said on Saturday.
“A suicide bomber, wearing a suicide belt, blew up himself near a checkpoint of al-Hashd al-Shaabi (Popular Mobilization Forces) in Baaj,” Lt. Gen. Esman al-Mallah told BasNews.
“The bodies were taken to forensic medicine department, while troops launched a campaign there in the region that ended up arresting ten suspects,” Mallah added.

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) An embargo has continued for a third day in a northe Baghdad region as security entered a second week in search for a sniper who had killed security members, a security source was quoted saying.
The source told Baghdad Today on Thursday that “a terrorist sniper in Tarimiya, north of Baghdad, had killed two soldiers, one near Ibin Sina and the other near ak-Houra, both in the same precinct”.
“Security forces have been chasing the sniper for two weeks, but have not apprehended him yet due to the region’s geography,” according to the source.
The United Nations Assistance Mission in Iraq (UNAMI) had recorded 115 deaths among Iraqis due to violence, armed conflict and terrorist attacks across the country during the month of January.
According to the organization, 3298 Iraqi civilians were killed and 4781 others were wounded in violence and armed conflict throughout 2017.
Most of the deadliest attacks in Baghdad had been claimed by Islamic State militants.
